About Michael Teoli

Michael Teoli is a versatile, award-winning LA-based composer who brings his talents to a wide range of mediums, including film and theater. A graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, Michael got his start working on Howard Shore's music team for The Lord of The Rings: Return of the King. Since then, he has scored/contributed to the music of over 70 films, with his score for the feature 41 winning Best Original Soundtrack at The Director's Chair Film Festival in Staten Island, NY. Among his notable film works are the Tubi Original family holiday adventure Family Ornaments, the Dark Sky Films slasher KillHer, and most recently Love, Danielle (starring Barry Bostwick and Lesley Ann Warren), a comedy-drama about a woman’s decision to undergo preventive surgery to reduce her cancer risk.

Michael has composed the music for several full-length musicals, including Tonya & Nancy: The Rock Opera, which has played to acclaim around the country and enjoyed a sold-out run at the New York Musical Theater Festival (NYMF) at an off-Broadway venue. The live album Tonya & Nancy (Highlights from the Rock Opera): Live at Feinstein's/54 Below was released by Broadway Records, with Michael co-producing, music directing, and even performing as Shawn Eckardt.

His theater work extends to numerous plays, such as West Adams (by Penelope Lowder), Hearts Like Fists (by Adam Szymkowicz), and Absolutely Filthy (by Ted Lasso’s Brendan Hunt), which won Top of Fringe at both the New York and Hollywood Fringe Festivals. Another favorite was creating the score to the 40th Anniversary Revival of Stuart Gordon's adaptation of the Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. novel The Sirens of Titan (directed by Ben Rock).

In addition to his film and theater work, Michael has created music for corporate videos and jingles for clients like Adobe, American Tax Solution, The Hub, RE/MEDIA, Wonderful, and RGP. His diverse portfolio also includes creating music for Rihanna’s FENTY brand, scoring and composing the theme for Shudder’s Video Palace, and crafting music for The Venardos Circus.

  • Michael Teoli’s original music is percussive and haunting, and cleverly imbued with Arabic motifs that help frame the story. This music effectively signals transitions between scenes to help differentiate between Michael’s cell and Lainie’s back home.
    — Julia Stier, STAGE RAW
  • Working with Mike on Criminal behavior was not only a smooth easy going process, it was also a learning experience as he is TRULY gifted in the art of making music and placing it EXACTLY where it should be to make your film's flow continuously smoooooth! It was an absolute please and honor to have worked with him!
    — Usman Sharif, Producer, "Criminal Behavior"
  • When I hired Michael, he not only created terrific music, but music which was absolutely perfect for my film. Michael is that rare artist who is exceptional at both creating and interpreting; the exact  blend of talents necessary for an outstanding film composer. I was extremely lucky to have found him.
    — Frank Stasio, Director, "Tilting At Skyscrapers"
  • Teoli’s progressive rock influences hover throughout and the score is an elaborate mix of sounds that reflect the dark psychology and seduction in the story. He has a way with a screaming rock ballad like “Pain” that sticks with you... One can already see that a cult following is imminent.
    — Ellen Dostal, Musicals in LA (On CarnEvil)
  • Michael and I first collaborated on a massive undertaking - Stuart Gordon’s adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s “The Sirens of Titan.” It was a play I’d wanted to direct for over twenty years and I had a specific sound in mind for the show - a Pink Floyd-inspired psychedelic vision of late 1950’s sci-fi and it’s collision with the militaristic themes that are so prevalent in both the book and the play. Michael nailed the various sounds and found musical motifs within them in that way that musical visionaries like him do, greatly expanding the feel and scope of the massive play and keeping it deep and personal to the characters. I love the soundtrack and still listen to it - it’s great music on its own and it added incalculable value and character to the show overall.
    — Ben Rock, Director, "Video Palace"
  • Michael combines professionalism with creativity to deliver great work on demand.  I enjoy collaborating with him and look forward to bringing him on my future projects.
    — Tommy Friedman, Director, "Neshima"
  • Working with Michael Teoli on Absolutely Filthy was an absolute pleasure. Michael took great care in researching the Dubstep genre I asked him to emulate, resulting in a score that sounded truly authentic, and a score that helped generate the world I had imagined for the play. Micheal is a collaborative artist that works extremely hard to support whatever story is being told. I always appreciate his contributions regardless of whether I am a collaborator, audience member or performer and I recommend him and his work without reservation.
    — Jeremy Aldridge, Director, "Absoloutely Filthy"
  • Michael Teoli is a true collaborator. They should be gifted with the one thing we all wish we had: the ability to listen. He actually listens to you. And delivers the goods like no one else I’ve worked with. He’s amazing.
    — Michael A. Shepperd, Director, "Too Heavy For Your Pocket"
  • Teoli's work on my film, 'Criminal Behavior' was grand. His music helped me elevate the film's expression from a mere exploitation film to a solid independent feature- which was exactly what I wanted.
    — Warren Pemberton, Director, "Criminal Behavior"
  • Michael Teoli is a composer with real talent. His underscoring, and original musical compositions for Shakespeare’s lyrics, perfectly fit the needs of our production of THE TEMPEST. Michael captured the production’s post-modern musical aesthetic with imagination and craft. He is openly collaborative, artistically flexible and a joy to work with. I look forward to future opportunities to work with him.
    — Jerry Prell, Director, "The Tempest"
  • Michael is one of the best collaborators I have ever worked with. He is absolutely dedicated to achieving your vision, but also unafraid to bring his own ideas to the table. His patience and professionalism throughout the long and often grueling process of scoring an independent film were remarkable, and he was always willing to work with my schedule and budget, while delivering musical quality and technical expertise that far exceeded my expectations.
    — Peter Hurd, Director "The Control Group"
  • Elizabeth Searle's book and lyrics, and Michael Teoli's music, are full of grit and spirit…This musical scratches beneath the glitz of ice-skating competitions and sharply reveals the darker side of the American Dream.
    — Deirdre Donovan, CurtainUp
  • Michael's such a good musician, but what's better is he really listened to my concerns. He assimilated my vision for a musical score into something that complimented Broadcast Blues so well. Many have commented on it.
    — Sue Wilson, Director, "Broadcast Blues"
  • I have had the pleasure to work with Michael on numerous projects. His talents always far succeed my expectations. Michael's skills as a composer and exceptional work habits makes him my first choice for any project. I would recommend Michael Teoli for any project.
    — Marc Fusco, Director, "After Roberto"
  • Michael is a passionate, talented and focused musician whose work as a Composer for music in my films has always been dead-on. He listened to us closely and he not only delivered what we wanted, but went above and beyond, adding his own musical interpretations that I as Director did not foresee. I recommend him highly. He is a valuable talent and collaborator
    — Christian De Rezendes, Director "41"
  • Michael Teoli's atmospheric music... highlight the spooky humor.
    — Steven Lee Morris, LA Weekly (On Hearts Like Fists)
  • Michael Teoli is the best and most talented composer I’ve worked with. He is an inspiring and generous collaborator who always delivers more than you bargained for.
    — Benjamin Mennell, Director, "Temecula"
